Frequently Asked Questions

  • South Africa uses the Rand (ZAR). Most places accept Visa and Mastercard, but it's smart to carry a bit of cash for markets, tips, and small shops. ATMs are widely available, and tipping 10–15% at restaurants is standard.

  • For safety and convenience, we recommend using Uber for all local transport. It’s affordable, widely available,. For longer trips, Curiocity is happy to arrange a driver.

  • Explore the colorful Bo-Kaap, lively Sea Point, upscale Camps Bay, hip Woodstock, chic De Waterkant, and historic CBD. Each offers a unique experience—from beachfront strolls to street art and local culture. Try Long Street for party vibes and Kloof or Bree Streets for food, bars, and boutique shopping.

  • Free Wi-Fi is available at many cafés and accommodations. For more reliable access, consider buying a local SIM card (Vodacom or MTN) or enabling international data roaming. Download Airlo for a digital SIM card. Most people will communicate via Whatsapp.

  • South Africans are warm and polite—greetings matter. Always ask, “How are you?” Respect personal space, tip service workers, ask before taking photos of people, and understand that time can be flexible (“now now” might mean later!).

  • Navigating Cape Town is similar to navigating most urban areas. Avoid walking alone at night. Keep your valuables (including your cell phone) concealed when you are in public. Use indoor ATMs in well lit areas.
